I’m pretty proud to have been in the comics and related businesses for 35 years and a full 25 years of it as the founder/owner/head honcho of Glass House Graphics.
Twenty-five years ago this month, I left Innovation Publishing to launch Glass House Graphics.
I’d begun Innovation in 1988 and brought the company to #4 in market share, behind only Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse despite minuscule budgets and “wiser heads” who insisted such licensed properties as The Vampire Lestat and Lost in Space would be surefire failures. Reality proved them wrong. But in 1993, I could see that the Century Equities investment group wasn’t interested in growing the company. I went in with a list of demands — one of which was the re-launch of Hero Alliance with Mike Deodato, Jr. as artist — and they rejected them all. The next day I put in my two weeks notice. The day I left: March 11, 1993.
That same day, I launched Glass House Graphics and began representing 20 or so artists from Brazil and a couple of American talents. Green Hornet for Now Comics was our first assignment, for artist Joe Bennett. Today Glass House Graphics reps nearly two hundred artists, inkers, letterers, colorists, painters, writers, and designers worldwide, and it provides publishing consulting, animation, design, printing, and production services to such varied clients as Disney, DreamWorks, Random House, St. Martin’s Press, Scholastic, Hasbro, Marvel, DC, Dabel Brothers, and beyond. THANK YOU for being a part of it with me.
