Where were you born? Where did you grow up?
I was born in Quezon City but grew up in San Pedro Laguna
Schooling? Art training?
Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts Advertising and then, Business Management. Currently studying for A.C.E. and Six Sigma.
How long have you been working professionally in comics?
Not in comics in particular, but have been making designs, artworks, band album art, book covers, advertising art since 1999.
What things — both in art and otherwise — have you worked on, besides comics? Are comics a full-time gig for you or part-time?
I also do music. www.lintech1.bandcamp.com it’s a solo project started in 2000 (used to be called “Hi-Fi Moloch) where my passion in ambient, spy-themed music takes place. I used to be part of a 15 year old band too called Funeral Frost. http://goo.gl/xmR5oK
Talk about how you broke into the business –was it easy? Hard? Ups? Downs? Any interesting anecdotes? When you held your first published work in your hands, how did you feel?
Hard. As there are a lot of skilful and talented Filipinos who does really great art, I just try to do my own thing, experiment on styles and techniques to find my own style. I’m not into figure drawing also. Back in college, I was noted as “Best on Abstract Expressionism” so that’s the kind of direction I’ve always taken in my artworks.
Did you work as an assistant to any other artists? If so, please talk a bit about those experiences.
I wish! 😀
How did your parents take to the idea of working in comics?
I guess for me, it is art or fine arts in general. My mom is a painter too, both of us was part of San Miguel’s class before getting formally trained and my dad, well, he was into The Doors and Black Sabbath.
How would you describe your workspace? Is it part of your home, or do you go “to the studio”? I got a room where I work and where my comics and toys are.
What job are you the proudest of? What’s your most embarrassing?
My works for Karl de Mesa’s “News of the Shaman” and “Damaged People” are by far, in my opinion, my proudest as it is also my latest works. I feel I tend to get better and better as each project goes by, using experience as part of my overall formula in creating art these days. I can’t say if I have maybe an artwork I am embarrassed about as I can’t really recall any. But I guess it will be those very old artworks I have which back then was proud off.
What are you currently drawing? Comments on that project?
I have a steady gig of creating poster art for various bands and prods. I just finished making a couple of cover art for writer Michael Buckley http://goo.gl/yyVrgS
Talk about your Family: Parents, siblings, home situation. Are you Married? Have kids? Anecdotes about married life, how it relates to your busy schedule, etc. If you have kids do they understand your job? What do they say about it? Do they read comics? I am married and we have a 4 year old son named Morpheus Viggo. As of now, my son doesn’t understand most things I do so he bugs me all the time. But he watches when I do artworks, sitting on my lap and all. Of course, he spends his time colouring on his colouring book and drawing weird faces on ALL our walls.
What projects do you hope to work on in the future?
The mother of all. Comic / Book / Graphic novel cover design from a well-respected, famous writer.
Where do you see yourself in five years? ten?
I’d like to be able to have established the company of my dreams. It’s an inventor’s nook where I employ inventors like myself and we just build shit up.
What is the interest in comics where you live? Do friends and neighbours know you draw comics for a living? How do they react? Almost every guy I know from high school and college was into comics. Back in my day, every guy was into comics… Collection of number ones from Image comics, buying mylars, buying those x-men 30 year cards, Valiant comics, Magic The Gathering, Animayhem, as well as watching animes on VHS, Skateboarding and being in a band was the life back then.
What’s 1 thing you’ll always find in your refrigerator?
What’s your favorite food?
What are your favourite interests –Movies? Music? TV? Any hobbies? Sports?
Yea, I’m into movies too. Secretly acting like a movie critique while watching movies. I also have some movie ideas in mind. Music, as I mentioned, creating music for game or movie soundtrack use. Hobbies would be creating them, art and music. That’s pretty much what I do on my spare time but I was heavily into Dungeons and Dragons before, playing for 15 years too. We were also quite fond of Vampire The Masquerade and Legend of the 5 Rings.
Have you ever thought of writing your own stories? Yea. I did back then. Probably 10 years ago. It’s called “De Gion” I was able to jot down 6 chapters before my computer crashed and deleted the file. Back then, everything was still floppy poppy drive. I was so devastated about its lost that I still haven’t found the courage (and time) to start all over again. But it’s always on my head. You can read a few scenes from my Facebook under the notes section. It was read once by these geezers who were looking for a concept for a game they were building. They said it was too dark.
What’s an average day in your life like? Walk us through a typical day.
I go to work as a Creative Manager for a company, handling 20+ graphic designers. When I get home, I spend time with my wife and kid. When they sleep, I tinker on the internet or make art or music. Whatever tickles my fancy that day. Sometimes I go out a jog a bit. I did boxing and Krav-Maga before too.
Any humorous or interesting anecdotes to tell about the comics business?
Is the magazine “Wizard” still available? I loved those.
Do you have any great, unsold projects in your files that nobody’s gotten to see published?
Probably one or two.
If you weren’t a comic-book artist today, what would you be?
Well, I’m not really a comic-book artist. I’m a little bit of something and everything I guess.
Have you taught comic-book art or had any assistants? If so, talk about that.
I used to teach oil painting and I had like 3 life protégés’ if that counts.
The single thing you’d most like to be remembered for in your life is…?
Haven’t really thought of that. “I’m just trying to make the line.”
Any closing words for your fans?
