Tan Anthony Ong “TAO”


Where were you born?
I was born in Metro Manila, Philippines.

Where did you grow up?
I grow up at Metro Manila.

Schooling? Art training?
I attended school at the University of Santo Tomas, and graduated with a Degree in Fine Arts : Major in Advertising Arts as Cum Laude. I didn’t have any training in coloring, maybe it’s just looking at the shadows around you.

How long have you been working professionally in comics?
I have been coloring comics for two years from 2007 to 2009.

Are comicsĀ  a full-time gig for you or part time?
I think right now it’s going to be a full-time gig for me.

Talk about how you broke into the busuness-was it easy? hard? ups? down?
Well it was expensive buying a tablet and a Nitro 5 laptopand then youhave to get your mind focus on the job, but after you have finish 1 or 2 pages everything becomes easier.

How would you describe your workspace? is it part of your home, or do you go “to the studio”?
It’s part of my home, because it’s a corner of my dining table.

What job are you the proudest of? what’s your most embarassing?
I am most proud of my Allan Quatermain coloring. and my most embarassing you won’t be seeing them on my portfolio Ha Ha Ha.

Talk about your Family:parents, siblings, home situation. Are you married?
I have 2 boys, they are both professionals now. My eldest son graduated Electrical engineering, got top 10 on the board exam and is now working with Meralco. My youngest is a scholar with St. Benilde, and graduated Cum Laude, and is now working as a 3D Artist with Ubisoft Philippines. And yes I’m married to my beautiful wife, and we both are working as freelancers at home.

What projects do you hope to work on in the future?
I would like to work on my favorite comic books, like Uncanny X-men, Fantastic four, Spiderman, and Avengers.

Where do you see yourself in five years? ten?
I see myself still working with Glass house graphics after ten years.

What’s 1 thing you’ll always find in your refrigerator?
Cold water.

What’s your favorite food?
Tosilog, Cornsilog, and Longsilog.

What are your favorite interests-movies? Television? Any Hobbies?
My favorite movies are Action, Thriller, and Fantasy. My favorite TV shows are HBO, SWAT, and FBI. and my favorite hobbies are board games like Runebound, and Dungeons and Dragons Adventure System.

Have you ever thought of writing your own stories?
No! But I wanted to try Inking.

Ever been in a gang?
Nooooooo!!!! Ha, Ha, Ha.

What’s an average day in your life like?
I wake up at 5:00am brush my teeth, eat my breakfast, look at my cel phone, at 6:30 I start checking my emails, and start working until 12:30pm, I eat my lunch, then go to sleepand wake up at 2:00pm, then I continue working until 7:00pm, then I eat my dinner, brush my teeth, grab my phone and look at my staff on FB until I get tired, then I go to sleep at 9:00pm.

If you weren’t a comic book artist today, what would you be?
Definitely a Graphic designer / Illustrator.

The single thing you’d most like to be remembered for in your life is…?
I have experienced Advertising, Graphic design, Illustrator, but I wanted people to remember me for my work as a Comic Colorist.
