Since when have you started doing arts?
I have started doing arts as my job since 1994, when I worked at a design company in Jogjakarta. In 1995, I established a community called Petak Umpet Community (now it’s PT Petak Umpet), and worked as illustrator and designer there. I stepped out from Petak Umpet at 1998, and joined an animation company called Bening as animator supervisor and editor. At the end of 1999, I worked as animator supplier for an advertising production house in jakarta. In 2003, my passion brought me back to Jogjakarta. I established Urak Urek Studio in 2003-until now.
Who inspire you arts? And why is that?
Well, I have some favorite artists whom I adore and have great influential in my style. They are: Teguh Santosa and Jan Mintaraga (they are Indonesian comic grandmaster in 50-70’s). Don Lawrence. John Buscema. Frank bellamy. Alex Ross, and Esad Ribic. The last two names inspire me so much in colors and lightning techniques. The simple reason why I adore those grandmaster, is because they brought the character right in front of you, in reality. Most artist can draw good and great, but making a character life is certainly something else.
What tools do you use for your arts?
Hahahahahh .. I won’t tell you my secret 😀 – but hey, here are some general tools I used: pencils, paper, tablet and a notebook (see.. nothing special *wink*), and I used Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Painter X for finalize.
Tell us what you think about ‘greatness’ in art.
Art IS great. All of art in its manifestation IS greatness. In its perception, art is always beautiful. But if you asked me about what art categorized as ‘good’ in my opinion, then my answer would be any art which can attract my eyes to examine it further. Simple, huh? I really hope you get it, lol.
Do you like movies? What movie do you think have the most impact on your life? Why?
Well I’m not really a maniac in movies. But I love seeing movies. And as you can see my profile photo up there (yes, that smiling eerie character IS me..), my favorite movie of all time is of course The Dark Knight. And if you asked me why, the answer is because of THE JOKER!! Heath Ledger played Joker PERFECTLY!! I was one of the movie fan who’d like to see a comic adapted movie which stays with the comic, but The Joker in The Dark Knight made me to make an exception! And the Back To the Future trilogy are my favorites too, just after The Dark Knight 😀 — hey, who doesn’t?
At comicon, who do you mostly want to see?
That would be Ross and Ribic.
