Bruce Colero

Digital Artist

Where were you born? Where did you grow up?
Born and raised in Toronto Canada.

How about your schooling? Had you gone under any art training?
Have two formal art degrees. One in design the other in illustration.

What things — both in art and otherwise — have you worked on, besides comics? Are comics a full-time gig for you or part-time?
I own a manufacturing and distribution company of sport supplement and skin care products. We sell to distributors and retail outlets across North America, Europe and the Middle East. Im currently looking at expanding my product lines and opening up additional streams of distribution.

Talk about how you broke into the business –was it easy? Hard? Ups? Downs ? Any interesting anecdotes? When you held your first published work in your hands, how did you feel?
It was easy. I was basically painting on the side as a diversion. I’ve been a big fan of erotic and pinup art for a long time. I contacted a publisher of pinup books and asked how to submit some samples. The secretary (couldn’t even speak to the art director) told me how, but mentioned that they get thousands of submissions and not to get my hopes up. I sent in some samples. The next day the publisher called me. 7 months later “The Art of Bruce Colero” is released worldwide. I’m currently at work on volume 2- set for release May 2008.

How did you settle on the style(s) you’re currently using? If you have multiple styles how did you develop them?
My style has evolved to what it is now. Prior to being a digital artist I was an airbrush illustrator – and hyper realism was always my goal. So as a digital artist that’s still my goal. Making the fantastic seem real and believable.

How would you describe your work space? Is it part of your home, or do you go “to the studio”?
I have art computers set up both at home and at my office. High end systems for speed and efficiency as I have ZERO patience.

What job are you the proudest of?
My next one.

What are you currently drawing? Comments on that project?
Im currently working on Skin Deep – The Art of Bruce Colero Vol 2. In between finishing that, I’m working on various commissioned gigs.

What projects do you hope to work on in the future?
I’d like to continue in the pinup field and do some comic cover work from time to time. Im in the fortunate position in being able to only take the jobs that I want to do.

Where do you see yourself in five years? ten?
Bigger and better.

What’s an average day in your life like?  Walk us through a typical day.
I live a fantasy life. I like to get to the office for noon. Ill get updated on various projects and steer them in the direction I want them to go if needed (which is rare, since my staff are highly competent). Go for lunch. Come back and continue working on various projects. I typically like to leave around 3pm and go to the gym. I work on my illustrations on the off hours.

If you weren’t a comic-book artist today, what would you be?
I am exactly where I want to be.

The single thing you’d most like to be remembered for in your life is…?
He was the best at everything he did.
