Where were you born? Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in Temuco, Chile
How about your schooling? Had you gone under any art training?
I studied Graphic Design at the Universidad Catolica de Temuco, but in the field of comic art and illustration I’m totally self taught.
How long have you been working professionally in comics?
About 3 years aprox.
What things -- both in art and otherwise -- have you worked on, besides comics? Are comics a full-time gig for you or part-time?
Besides comics and illustration I woked as a teacher of Computer Animation at the Universidad Mayor de Temuco for about 4 years, and as a freelance artist from time to time. Right now I’m working full-time as an artist.
Talk about how you broke into the business --was it easy? Hard? Ups? Downs ? Any interesting anecdotes? When you held your first published work in your hands, how did you feel?
Thanks to internet, breaking into the business was not so hard. I prepared a very basic online portfolio with my (until then) not so good works… since then I didn’t stop working. Some has been really good assignments, but some very bad as well. I made a big pause between 2001 – 2004 because of my work as a teacher. When I decided to stop with that and become a comic artist (as always dream of), I prepared some new material and send it to several publishers again… I was contacted by Avatar Press editor and start working all over again…
How did you settle on the style(s) you're currently using? If you have multiple styles how did you develop them?
My actual style is a result of multiple artistic influences. My b&w art is strongly influenced by Berni Wrightson, Marc Schultz, Frank Frazetta (his bw works), Moebius, Bilal. My color stuff is the result of a lot of experiment, first with traditional mediums (acrylics, colored pencils, airbrush, etc), and then all the digital tools (Photoshop, Painter, Zbrush). My biggest influences in this field has been Richard Corben, Simon Bisley, Frank Frazetta, Drew Struzan and actually Gabriele dell’Otto, Esad Ribic, Clayton Crain… the more illustrated stuff.
How did your parents take to the idea of working in comics?
They’ve supported me a lot. They love the idea of me doing what I always love to do… and get pay for that!
How would you describe your work space? Is it part of your home, or do you go "to the studio"?
I got my studio as part of my house. I got everything that I need in hand, my pc optimized for graphic work, a wacom tablet, an A3+ printer (for prints, poster and stuff like that), and my drawing table with a bunch of different pencils and papers. My collection of illustration books and comicbooks… and a lot of music cds.
What job are you the proudest of?
The work that I’m proudest of will be always my next work J
What are you currently drawing? Comments on that project?
I recently finished a couple of cover illustrations for Arcana Comics, and I’m preparing a portfolio based on Star Wars universe… I’m a big fan of the original trilogy.
What projects do you hope to work on in the future?
I would love to do something with Hulk, is my favorite comic character of all time.
Where do you see yourself in five years? ten?
Drawing, painting… and drawing.
What is the interest in comics where you live? Do friends and neighbors know you draw comics for a living? How do they react?
People have been always very supportive about what I do for living. Is not so common to do what you love and be paying for that, I feel very lucky for that.
What's 1 thing you'll always find in your refrigerator?
Orange juice (light), coke, ice cubes hehe.
What's your favorite food?
Any kind of spaghetti, and chilean food of course.
What are your favorite interests --Movies? Music? TV? Any hobbies? Sports?
As I said before, I’m a BIG fan of Star Wars, also I love horror and sci-fi movies. I listen music all the time, specially when I’m working. Sport?... only bike.
Have you ever thought of writing your own stories?
A few times but I quit since I realized that I’m better drawing and painting than creating stories. But I got a couple of short stories anyway… maybe some day they’ll see the daylight.
What's an average day in your life like? Walk us through a typical day.
I’m on my desk at 9 in the morning, checking emails and stuff, to then start drawing (or painting) until 2 PM (lunch). I returning to my desk (or drawing table) at 3 PM until 8 or 9 PM. That’s from Monday to Friday, on Saturday I try to work only at morning. The rest of the time I spend it watching tv, surfing the net and with my friends.
Do you have any great, unsold projects in your files that nobody's gotten to see published?
I made a short 3D animated movie (7 minutes long) a couple of years back. I did all the models, textures, animations, sound FXs, final editions and some sound scores too (uf!). It took me almost an entire year to completed… I hope to put it online very soon.
If you weren't a comic-book artist today, what would you be?
Defenitly sculptor.
The single thing you'd most like to be remembered for in your life is...?
For be always what I wanted to be.
Any other tidbits of info about you that you are like to share?
Always try to keep your dreams alive.
