Where were you born? Where did you grow up?
I was born in Manila , and raised in Quezon City .

Tell us about your schooling? Any art training?
Whilce Portacio's comic creation course. They've trained me in pencilling and storytelling illustrations for about 2 months.

How long have you been working professionally in comics?
That was way back in ‘93. I worked in a local comic company for about a year.

What things - both in art and otherwise - have you worked on, besides comics? Are comics a full time gig for you or part time?
I'm currently working in a local publishing book company as an illustrator. But for me, the real deal is working full-time in comics.

SPOTLIGHT: Can you talk about how you broke into the business - was it easy? Any ups and downs?
It's really hard entering in a comic company. I was 16 when I applied in a local comic company. I got many rejected drawings. I almost gave up, but I didn't loose hope. So what I do is I've tried to get in touch with the regular artists and get some advises. It took me two months until I got my first series; ROLLERDUDES { setting is in the future were 4 teenagers are wearing high-tech roller blades as they battle mutants, monsters, machines, etc. } Then there is MYSTERIO { A man who transforms into a beast, like HULK } X-MENITO { teenager X-MEN look-alike }I've done some short stories, posters and pin-ups. After the company closed I've joined another local company and done my first comic creation; SANCTUARY { an archeologist who disappeared in Egypt, discovering a sanctuary where the Egyptians thought it was a temple of a god, but it was an alien hive, offering humans and transforming them into alien beasts. Including the archeologist } It's really fun working on comics, you'll get so many friends along the way.

Did you work as an assistant to any other artists?
There was this artist who is also a writer of this local superhero title. I assist him in inking his pencils. Then the time came, when the editor decided that I'll do the pencils and the inking, and the artist will only do the script, it's a funny thing..... He stopped writing it.

How did your parents take to the idea of working in comics?
They didn't think it was a problem. they`ve supported me.

What job are you proudest of? What's your most embarrassing?
I'm proud working in comics. I don't have any embarrassing job so far.

What are you currently drawing? Comments on that project?
I'm currently working on a local publishing book company. It's for grade school and high school students. Not the type of work I'm dreaming of, but it's my present bread and butter.

Talk about your family: Parents, siblings, home situation. Are you married? Have kids? Anecdotes about married life, how it relates to your busy schedule, etc. If you have kids do they understand your job? What do they say about it? Do they read comics?
My wife is very supportive when it comes to my work. She understands the time I'm spending in my work, since she also a comics fanatic and an art lover. having no kids is an advantage to my situation.

What projects do you hope to work on in the future?
Any Marvel, D.C. projects or any medieval-fantasy type comics. I love drawing dwarves, elves, orcs, dragons, knights, etc.

Where do you see yourself in five years? ten?
I was hoping to work full-time in comics.

What is the interest in comics where you live? Do friends and neighbors know you draw comics for a living? how do they react?
My friends know I once worked in comics. We mostly talk about artworks. Mostly, when a new person saw my comic illustration, The first thing I hear is; “can you draw my face?“

What's 1 thing you'll always find in your refrigerator?
Water.

What's your favorite food?
Spaghetti and vegetable salad.

What are your favorite interests—Movies? Music? T.V? Any hobbies? Sports?
For movies, I love LORD OF THE RINGS! SPIDERMAN! SUPERMAN! ALIENS! KINGKONG { Peter Jackson version } AND STAR WARS! I'm into heavy metal, rock, mellow, lovesongs, new wave, anime theme songs and movie theme songs. I usually watch news and boxing. I play D.O.T.A., role playing games in PS2. My hobbies are making board games and making toy models of famous robot characters out of cardboard { VOLTES 5, TRANSFORMERS, VOLTRON etc. } and they really transform! I love swimming and playing table tennis.

Have you ever thought of writing your own stories?
Last year, I've written and drawn one. It's entitled “ THE GIFT OF ARCANE MIGHT “ which is in the portfolio. It's about the dwarven kingdom of Rune hammer, waiting for the gift to be delivered by a mysterious elven warrior.

Ever been in a gang?
Never.

What's an average day in your life like? Walk us through a typical day.
I work from 8am to 5pm. That's from monday to sunday at my current job. When I'm at home, I spend time watching t.v. and sometimes playing PS2 or D.O.T.A. On sundays I go to the mall with my wife or I watch boxing.

Any humorous or Interesting anecdotes to tell about the comics bussiness?
There was this local veteran artist. And he told me that he has discovered the newest technique in drawing comic illustration. He said; “ it has to be beautiful.”

Do you have any great, unsold projects in your files that nobody's gotten to see published?
“THE GIFT OF ARCANE MIGHT” which is in the portfolio. It's never been published or sold.

If you weren't a comic book artist today, what would you be?
Maybe creating game boards, designing toys or going back to my local publishing book office.

Have you taught comic-book art or had any assistants? If so, talk about that.
Yes I've taught comic book art. I enjoyed teaching teenage enthusiasts.

The single thing you'd most like to be remembered in your life is..?
Hoping to be known as a Filipino comic book illustrator.

Any closing words for your fans?
Keep the kid in you..
